CAEL Speaking Test

For the speaking part of the exam, you will reply verbally to prompts on your computer screen.

What is the format of the Speaking Test?

There are three speaking tasks on this part of the exam.

Two of the speaking tasks are based on short questions about familiar topics, such as study abroad or aspects of the student’s home country.

There will also be another speaking task which is based on analyzing visual data, such as a graph, diagram, or chart.

The speaking part of the exam lasts for 7 to 10 minutes.

What does the speaking test include?

Speaking Task 1

Speaking task 1 will be on a topic that is familiar to you, such as life in your home country or study abroad.

You will have 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak.

Here is a sample of speaking task 1:

Can you please describe what you want to study at university and why?

Speaking Task 2

In this speaking task, you will also probably be presented with a topic that is familiar to you, such as travel or family life. You may also be asked to give an opinion on something.

You will be given 60 seconds to prepare and 90 seconds to speak.

A task 2 sample question could be as follows:

In your opinion, what is the importance of family celebrations in your country?

Speaking Task 3

For this task, you will see a graph or chart and you will need to describe and analyze it.

You will be given 1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to speak.

Here is an example of a task 3 question:

Describe and explain the information in the graph below.
